“From Summer League Sensation to Hometown Hero: DJ Steward Joins Chicago Bulls on Two-Way Deal”
Former Boston Celtics G League guard DJ Steward signed a two-way contract with the Chicago Bulls on Sunday. Steward impressed during the NBA Summer League with the Bulls, leading the team in points and assists, which secured him the contract. The Chicago native now has a deal with his hometown team.
“The Chicago Bulls announced today the team has signed guard DJ Steward to a two-way contract,” the Bulls stated in a press release. “Steward, 6-2, 162, played 32 games (five starts) with the Maine Celtics, the Boston Celtics’ G League affiliate, in 2023-24, averaging 19.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 0.8 steals in 29.7 minutes per game. He had 18 games with 20 or more points and scored over 30 points twice last season, along with three double-doubles. Steward was one of six G League players in 2023-24 to average at least 19 points per game in 30 or more games.
The Chicago native was named G League Player of the Week for games from March 11-17, 2024, averaging 27.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, 5.5 assists, and 1.3 steals per game, part of a nine-game streak of 20-plus points (2/25/24-3/21/24), the longest of his G League career.”
Steward hopes to replicate his G League success with the Bulls. In the Summer League, he led the Bulls with 17.4 points per game and 6.4 assists per game, ranking fourth in steals with 1.4 per game and third in minutes with 29.1 per game.
Before the NBA, Steward played one season at Duke, averaging 13 points, 2.4 assists, and 3.9 rebounds per game.
It remains to be seen if Steward can secure a permanent spot with the Bulls.
