“From Giroud to Morata: AC Milan’s New Striker Evolution”
Olivier Giroud left AC Milan after his contract expired at the end of June, and it is perceived that Alvaro Morata taking over his position is akin to a ‘passing of the baton.’
La Gazzetta dello Sport compared the two players over the past two seasons. Giroud was almost irreplaceable for Stefano Pioli, while Morata started most games under Diego Simeone but modified his playing style somewhat.
The Frenchman, since joining, was crucial to the team’s attack due to his availability. Last season, he made 47 appearances (38 as a starter), scoring 17 goals and providing eight assists across all competitions. The former Arsenal and Chelsea player, now at Los Angeles FC, was a central figure for Milan.
Giroud was integral to the team’s build-up play and delivering service into the penalty area. He played with his back to goal, pressed hard, and scored important goals. Over the past two seasons, he made 94 appearances (77 starts), averaged 70 minutes per game, scored 35 goals, and had 16 assists, with a conversion rate of 16.6%.
Morata, on the other hand, evolved significantly in the last two seasons. Playing with Los Colchoneros during the 2019-20 season and in the last two years, his heat maps show a shift in his role. Under Simeone, Morata became more of a traditional striker, focusing his presence in the final 30 meters, aligning with what coach Fonseca sought.
Morata’s last season at the Wanda Metropolitano was the best of his career in terms of goals, netting 21 goals (36 when including the previous season in 93 games). Winning the European Championship as Spain’s captain in Germany further demonstrated his importance. For head coach De la Fuente, Morata was crucial in support play and creating space for Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal.
