Back surgery will prevent USMNT player Tyler Adams from playing in the Premier League.
After undergoing back surgery, Tyler Adams, a midfielder for AFC Bournemouth and the United States men’s national team, may have to miss further time due to injury, as stated by Cherries manager Andoni Iraola.
On Saturday, Bournemouth will host UC Santa Barbara for a preseason friendly against Wrexham, who play in EFL League One. When Iraola was questioned about how crucial it was for Adams to remain healthy during the pregame press conference, he disclosed that the midfield player had had back surgery.”He finished the season with an injury in his back,” Iraola stated. “He wanted to play Copa América because it was very important for him, but he had restrictions and was still in pain, so two days after they were knocked out, he had surgery.”
Iraola went on to say that he anticipates Adams will be sidelined for a while, but he would not provide a precise comeback date for the midfield player.
“It is difficult to say how long but he won’t be fit for the start of the season,” Iraola stated. However, September? October? I’m not sure.
The question then shifted to Iraola: Why didn’t Bournemouth stop Adams from participating in the Copa América? “That was not our choice,” the manager stated. He wanted to play because he thought his injury would get better, but he felt like it was getting worse. Ultimately, it is up to the nations to decide which players to choose.”
A minute restriction had been placed on Adams prior to the Copa América. He played barely 14 minutes in the 1-1 draw with Brazil and did not participate in the 5-1 friendly loss to Colombia.
Prior to the Brazil friendly in June, Adams was questioned about the back problem in an interview with ESPN. Although he stated he was increasing his fitness with the U.S. team, he acknowledged that it was a problem towards the end of the club season.
“Towards the end of the season, it was my back,” Adams remarked. “However, I felt okay going into camp and was prepared to train, but they insisted on building it up gradually. Again, having a successful Copa America is certainly the most essential thing to me, but I also want to be prepared for preseason. All I want is to get in shape so that I can build up to the start of the season for eight, nine, or ten weeks and be ready to become strong once more.”
During the course of three Copa América matches, Adams played 180 minutes, including 90 minutes against Uruguay in the group stage final that resulted in a 1-0 loss that eliminated the United States from the competition.
Adams underwent surgery to address yet another injury setback following his $25 million signing from Leeds United in August of last year. Following hamstring surgery in October, the USMNT captain played in just four first-team games for the Cherries last season, logging a total of 138 minutes. He’d had a similar operation once, back when he was at Leeds.
Adams is set to miss two U.S. friendlies in the September international window vs Canada and New Zealand due to the most recent procedure. This might be the manager’s debut for the next USMNT after Gregg Berhalter was fired on July 10.
