“Fresh Faces on the Horizon: Darry and Proctor Poised for All Blacks Debuts Against Fiji”

All Blacks assistant coach Leon MacDonald has clarified the choice to leave Patrick Tuipulotu in New Zealand, with Blues lock Sam Darry stepping in to face Fiji.

After two intense matches against England, New Zealand selectors decided to prioritize Tuipulotu’s fitness. The 31-year-old initially suffered a serious knee injury during the Blues’ quarter-final but made a surprising return to start in the Grand Final against the Chiefs, earning a standing ovation when he was substituted.

Despite being included in Scott Robertson’s first All Blacks squad and playing in both Tests against England, Tuipulotu did not travel with the team to San Diego for the upcoming match. MacDonald explained that the decision was based on Tuipulotu’s physical condition, noting his previous injuries and the demands of facing England.

To give Tuipulotu a breather, Sam Darry has been selected for the trip, having had a strong season with the Blues after overcoming an earlier injury. Darry started nine matches this year, including the Grand Final."All Blacks Set to Welcome 'NEW TALENT: Darry and Proctor Eye Potential Debuts Against Fiji...Read more"

Darry is poised to possibly make his debut in the iconic black jersey when New Zealand faces Fiji at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego this Saturday afternoon (NZT).

“Darry is an incredibly talented young player. Although injuries have limited his time on the field, he continues to improve with each game he plays,” MacDonald stated.

“As a coaching group, we’re really impressed with Sam. He has excelled in this environment, demonstrating strong work ethic and determination.”

“His selection for this tour is well-deserved.”

Darry may debut alongside other uncapped players, including Hurricanes center Billy Proctor, who has been performing well all season and might finally get his chance.

“Billy is fantastic,” MacDonald said. “I first worked with him during my time with the All Blacks XV, and I enjoyed his playing style. He’s a keen learner of the game and has a skill set and work rate that rival any top midfielder.”

“He’s been pushing hard and is ready for his opportunity. I believe he would adapt well to Test rugby.”
