“Ben Davies Aims for Consistency and Starting Role in Rangers Defense”

Rangers are in a period of transition as Philippe Clement aims to build on a previous season marked by inconsistency.

The manager faces a challenging task, needing to sell players to make room for new signings. Some players have been told they can find new clubs, but, as Clement acknowledged, this is not always straightforward. One player looking to move past the 2023/24 season is eager for a fresh start.

Ben Davies, a £4m signing from Liverpool, hopes to become a consistent presence in the team. The competition for places in the defense is intense, with six senior defenders, including Leon King and Clinton Nsiala, vying for spots. Davies, speaking during Rangers’ pre-season camp in the Netherlands, expressed his determination to have a full pre-season to improve his fitness and be ready for the upcoming season. He emphasized the importance of getting back into rhythm after a short summer break and focusing on recovery and preparation.

“We’re about halfway through pre-season, so we’re still working on building fitness, sharpness, and concentration. On a personal level, and for about five or six others, our focus is on completing the pre-season. If everyone maintains this mindset and stays strong and fit, the manager will have a full squad to choose from, which is better than last season for me personally.”

Davies is a divisive figure among Rangers fans. The 28-year-old, experienced in England’s second tier, is well-regarded down south. Liverpool typically sign capable players, and while Davies’ perceived lack of physicality is a common critique, he impressed at the end of last season and played in every Europa League game when Rangers topped their group.

Davies is the best passer and one of the quickest among the six defenders available. However, lapses in concentration, especially in Old Firm derbies, have tarnished his reputation. Philippe Clement, known for his loyalty to performing players, has noted Davies’ performances. Both John Souttar and Leon Balogun had long stints of trust, and Clement even benched Connor Goldson.

Against Ajax, Davies looked solid while Goldson switched off at a quick free kick, which boosted his chances of starting the season. Staying fit is crucial—a challenge for many in the current squad and one that Clement is addressing. There’s interest in Davies from England, but if he chooses to stay, he knows what he needs to do.
