“Strategic Moves the Steelers Could Make to Bolster Their Super Bowl Chances”
The Steelers have made some unconventional decisions since Omar Khan became the GM. However, there are still several strategic moves that could further strengthen their roster. Acquiring one of these players would be both thrilling and impactful, potentially boosting the team’s Super Bowl chances this season.
1. Trading for Brandon Aiyuk
To bolster their wide receiver corps, a prominent move would be acquiring Brandon Aiyuk from the San Francisco 49ers. This trade would likely involve a high draft pick and a significant contract. Given the Steelers’ ample cap space and limited high-end spending on offense, this is feasible.
However, this move would probably mark the end of George Pickens’ time with the Steelers. They might trade him next offseason or let him finish his rookie contract and become a free agent, as it wouldn’t be wise to pay top-tier money to two wide receivers.
Bringing in Aiyuk would complete the offense and make it more dynamic and exciting.
2. Acquiring Jonathan Allen to strengthen the defensive line
Another intriguing scenario is trading for Commanders’ defensive lineman Jonathan Allen, who will be a free agent in 2026. With Washington rebuilding and having drafted a defensive tackle in the second round this year, trading Allen, who has a high cap hit, for draft picks could make sense.
For the Steelers, this would be strategic. With Cameron Heyward’s contract negotiations stalled and his future uncertain, bolstering the defensive line is wise, especially as Heyward is already 35. If Larry Ogunjobi continues to struggle, Allen could be an excellent contingency plan for 2025.
Even if Heyward stays, the Steelers could financially manage Allen’s contract due to Keeanu Benton being on a rookie deal. Ogunjobi, who currently plays a rotational role, could be repositioned.
A defensive line featuring Heyward, Benton, and Allen, with Ogunjobi rotating in, would create a stronger unit and provide a solid backup plan for the future.
3. Securing cornerback depth
This logical move involves acquiring Deommodore Lenoir from the 49ers, a cornerback who will be a free agent next year. While the 49ers might be hesitant to trade him due to their Super Bowl aspirations, it’s worth considering since they recently drafted a similar player, Renardo Green.
Lenoir, capable of playing both outside and in the slot, would significantly enhance the Steelers’ cornerback depth. The 49ers would gain a draft pick for a player who might leave in free agency, and the Steelers would get a much-needed player, especially with Cameron Sutton suspended for eight games.
Lenoir could fill the slot role during Sutton’s absence and become interchangeable with him upon his return. Alternatively, he could move to the outside if Donte Jackson struggles.
