“Derrick Henry’s Drive and Adaptability Shine in Ravens’ Offseason Program”
“The Baltimore Ravens’ signing of running back Derrick Henry during NFL free agency in March appeared to be a perfect fit from the start. The former Alabama standout described his decision to join Baltimore as an easy one, while Ravens coach John Harbaugh praised Henry’s compatibility with their team.
However, NFL analysts raised concerns about one aspect of this fit. With Lamar Jackson, one of the league’s top dual-threat quarterbacks, Baltimore operated from the shotgun formation for 58 percent of their plays in 2023, ranking sixth in the NFL.
During his tenure with the Tennessee Titans spanning eight seasons, Henry typically received handoffs from a quarterback under center, with Tennessee starting 70 percent of their plays this way last season, ranking fifth in the league.
This difference was noted by Ravens running backs coach Willie Taggert during the team’s mandatory minicamp. He initially questioned how Henry would adjust to Baltimore’s shotgun-heavy offense after watching his film from Tennessee. However, Taggert’s concerns were alleviated once he witnessed Henry’s agility and movement during practices.
“Observing his tape from Tennessee raised some concerns,” Taggert explained. “We predominantly use the shotgun formation here, but Derrick’s ability to adapt has been impressive. He moves exceptionally well for his size and possesses good footwork and vision.”
Taggert emphasized Henry’s versatility and work ethic, highlighting that Henry’s commitment to excellence ensures he thrives regardless of the offensive scheme.
“He’s an elite worker who detests making mistakes,” Taggert added. “He’s driven to excel in everything he does, whether it’s running routes as a receiver or handling plays from under center. Derrick’s athleticism and dedication make him a valuable asset in any situation.”
“But he’s driven to be the best and stay informed. Even when he’s not here, he’s texting me, asking about new plays or details from film sessions. It’s been fantastic as a coach to work with someone who, despite his extensive experience, still strives to perform at a high level.”
Taggert noted this as perhaps the most surprising aspect of getting to know Henry during Baltimore’s offseason program.
“For someone who has played as long as he has and achieved what he has achieved, to come in here with such hunger and eagerness to learn,” Taggert said, “he doesn’t carry himself like someone who thinks he’s already done it all. He fits seamlessly into the team environment as if he’s been a Raven forever. He’s been incredible.”
“You might expect a player with his level of success to come in with a set way of doing things,” Taggert continued, “but Derrick wants to understand our system and contribute in every way possible to help us win a championship.”
Henry, who joined the NFL as a second-round pick of the Tennessee Titans in 2016 after a stellar collegiate career at Alabama, prepares for his ninth NFL season. He won the 2015 Heisman Trophy and set SEC records for rushing yards and touchdowns during Alabama’s national championship run.
After initially serving as DeMarco Murray’s backup, Henry has amassed 8,268 yards and 80 touchdowns over the past six seasons. He stands just 498 yards shy of becoming the NFL’s 32nd player to reach 10,000 rushing yards and needs only 10 more touchdowns to join the league’s elite group of players with 100 rushing touchdowns.
“We all know what he’s capable of on the field,” Taggert emphasized. “When Derrick is out there with the ball, I’m confident he’ll do an outstanding job for us.”
Henry is set to report for training camp on July 20 at the Under Armour Performance Center in Owings Mills, Maryland.
The Ravens begin their preseason with a game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Aug. 9 and kick off their regular season against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sept. 5, marking the start of the NFL’s 2024 season.
