“Dolphins Restructure Finances, Eyeing Tagovailoa Deal”
The Miami Dolphins have been engaged in positive contract negotiations with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, according to ESPN’s Jeff Darlington. Both parties have been discussing a new deal since June as training camp nears, but no agreement has been reached yet.
Reports suggest that the new contract will not be in the range of Jared Goff’s four-year, $212 million extension or Trevor Lawrence’s five-year, $275 million deal. Despite this, both Tagovailoa and the Dolphins are keen to finalize a contract before the new NFL season begins. If no deal is made, Tagovailoa may face a “prove-it” year in 2024.
Tagovailoa’s performance in the regular season has been strong, with 12,639 passing yards and 81 touchdowns over four seasons, including 4,624 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions in 2023, leading the Dolphins to an 11-6 record.
However, the Dolphins have struggled in the postseason, and Tagovailoa needs to demonstrate he can lead the team to success in crucial games to secure a lucrative contract.
The Dolphins’ last playoff appearance was a disappointing loss to Kansas City. For Tagovailoa to earn a significant contract, he must prove he can lead the team to deeper playoff runs. If a contract extension is agreed upon before the 2024 season, all attention will be on the Dolphins’ postseason performance.
The Miami Dolphins have successfully reduced their cap space deficit from over $25.2 million to approximately $3.6 million. This was achieved through active offseason trades and contract restructuring. This financial maneuvering positions the Dolphins to potentially secure a contract extension for Tua Tagovailoa for the upcoming season, assuming negotiations go as planned.
