“Watkins’ Struggles at St James’ Park: Pleads Newcastle Not to Expand Gallowgate End”

Watkins has scored four goals in seven matches against the Magpies since his £28 million transfer to Villa four years ago. However, he has never scored at St James’ Park.

The 28-year-old has yet to secure a win on Tyneside, with his last two visits resulting in heavy 5-1 and 4-0 defeats. During a 1-0 loss in February 2022, his equalizing goal was disallowed for offside.

Given this track record, it’s no surprise Watkins feels he performs poorly there. He also mentioned the imposing height of the Leazes Stand, where away fans are seated at the very top.

With potential plans to expand St James’ Park, Watkins has urged Newcastle not to make the Gallowgate End similarly high.

In a conversation on England’s official YouTube channel with Crystal Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson, Watkins said: “Newcastle, St James’ Park. I’ve had a stinker there every year, I think! You just look up at that one stand and it keeps going and going. I’ve heard they’re making another like that and I’m like ‘no, don’t’. Please don’t!”"Newcastle Woes: Villa Striker Urges Against St James' Park Expansion...Read more"

Watkins was once a transfer target for Newcastle before he moved to Villa Park. That same summer, Callum Wilson joined Newcastle from AFC Bournemouth for £20 million.

For England’s Euro 2024 squad, Watkins and former Magpies striker Ivan Toney were selected over Wilson, who missed several matches last season due to injury.
