“Newcastle United Secure Major Sales to Avoid Points Deduction and Bolster Squad for 2024-25 Season”
The Magpies were on the verge of a Premier League points deduction as they scrambled to generate funds by selling players to meet Profitability and Sustainability Rules before the June 30 deadline. At the last moment, Newcastle secured deals to sell Yankuba Minteh to Brighton & Hove Albion and Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest for a total of £68 million.
Consequently, the club has complied with PSR and will start the 2024-25 season without a points deduction and with a robust transfer budget to enhance the squad.
Newcastle’s last-minute deals received mixed reactions: some thought it was cutting it too close, while others lauded the club’s determination to finalize two of its biggest sales in history just in time.
In addition, Newcastle agreed on a compensation fee with Manchester United for Dan Ashworth and appointed Paul Mitchell as the new sporting director. Permanent signings of Lloyd Kelly, Lewis Hall, Odysseas Vlachodimos, and John Ruddy were also confirmed. After a challenging few weeks, things are finally falling into place ahead of the new season.
