“Tony Bloom Calls for Financial Responsibility Among Premier League Clubs to Avoid Mid-Season Penalties”
Brighton owner Tony Bloom believes it would be better if clubs did not force the Premier League to issue penalties, following Newcastle United’s hurried efforts to comply with PSR rules.
Newcastle scrambled to raise funds to avoid a potential points deduction for not meeting the league’s financial rules, selling Yankuba Minteh to Brighton for £33 million and allowing Elliot Anderson to join Nottingham Forest for £35 million.
In contrast, Brighton, with different ambitions, had no such concerns. They reported a record profit of £122.8 million in their latest accounts, excluding the £140 million from selling Moises Caicedo and Robert Sanchez to Chelsea in the 23-24 season.
These strong finances allowed Brighton to make a late move for Minteh before the June 30 deadline. However, Bloom dismissed last-minute deals by clubs like Newcastle to avoid penalties as insignificant, even though Brighton benefited.
“I don’t like the idea of mid-season points deductions,” he said. “It would be much better if clubs didn’t put the Premier League in a position where they have to issue punishments.”
Bloom’s remarks follow Brighton CEO Paul Barber’s earlier statement that it would be “bizarre” for Premier League clubs to be allowed greater losses over a three-year period, considering the current £105 million limit has not increased with inflation since its introduction over a decade ago.
