“Newcastle’s Goalkeeper Plans Shift: Mamardashvili Move Off the Table”
Newcastle United’s interest in Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili appears to have ended following the club’s recent goalkeeper signings. According to Levante EMV, the market for Mamardashvili has effectively closed after Newcastle’s earlier attempts to acquire him.
Despite Mamardashvili’s impressive performance at Euro 2024, which attracted attention across Europe, no club is willing to meet Valencia’s €40 million asking price. Newcastle had shown interest and initiated talks but were unwilling to meet the demands, ultimately backing out.
Newcastle’s pursuit of Mamardashvili is likely over, especially after signing John Ruddy and Odysséas Vlachodimos. With five goalkeepers in their squad, including Nick Pope as the first choice and a competition between Vlachodimos and Martin Dubravka for the second spot, it is improbable that Newcastle will spend €40 million on another goalkeeper.
This situation is unfortunate for Mamardashvili, who seemed ready for a move following his strong Euro 2024 performance, and for Newcastle, who missed out on a target and had to seek alternative options.
