Jerry Tuwai has the potential to accelerate Fiji’s comeback.
Jerry Tuwai, the double Olympic gold medallist, will lead the team in the Olympic Games in France. Under former head coach Ben Gollings, his position in the Fiji sevens squad was seriously questioned.
It would be a stunning development for the playwright who led his nation to gold in Rio and Tokyo and is currently attempting an amazing hat-trick in Paris if Fiji decides to give Tuwai the reins. After the head coach informed the sevens legend that he lacked the fitness standards necessary to be considered for a recall, Gollings and Tuwai got into a social media argument. It compelled the Fiji rugby authority to arrange a meeting between the two to try and reach a resolution.
After taking a break from his full-time work in Wales, former head coach Gareth Baber, who led Fiji to gold in Tokyo, was appointed as consultant national programme manager for 7s till the Olympic challenge is over. Baber has mentioned the possibility of Tuwai guiding the team. Baber’s assistance was requested after Gollings was replaced by Osea Kolinisau, the 2016 Olympic gold medal winning captain, following a string of 19 disappointing performances in the HSBC SVNS competition.
While practice matches are not yet scheduled, the Fiji sevens side is currently its route to France where they will hold a training camp. Baber said the Fiji Times, “At this point, we haven’t selected a captain.” People will undoubtedly focus on Jerry Tuwai because of his great group leadership, which is a major factor in his inclusion in the 15-man squad.
In the end, though, a team should have three or four captains. Before entering the games village, we spend more than two weeks in France. “It’s really about concentrating on ourselves; we’re taking 15 players because injuries are a given in 7s.” “We want to make sure that our training reflects that quality.”
