During his first press conference as Brighton manager, Fabian Hurzeler expressed his ambition to “achieve big things and challenge the establishment.” The 31-year-old, now the youngest permanent manager in Premier League history, took over at the Amex Stadium after leading St Pauli to Bundesliga promotion last season.
Hurzeler, a Texas-born German, emphasized the significance of his move to “the best league in the world” and his readiness to adapt his coaching philosophy. Brighton’s first league match is against Everton on August 17.
Acknowledging the magnitude of the role, Hurzeler stated, “I’m aware this is a huge job. It’s a big challenge, and I think I need a lot of courage and ability, so I need to stay humble.” He plans to discuss his goals with his players to ensure they are aligned and motivated.
Having replaced Roberto De Zerbi, who departed for Marseille after two successful seasons, Hurzeler praised De Zerbi’s impactful style of football but noted he would bring his own philosophy while incorporating some of De Zerbi’s elements.
Brighton chairman Tony Bloom dismissed concerns about Hurzeler’s limited head coaching experience, calling the appointment a calculated decision. “The whole city should be very excited. We put a lot of effort into this appointment and believe Fabian is the best fit for the club,” Bloom said.
