On Sunday, the New York Yankees announced on X (previously Twitter) that they had placed another former Los Angeles Dodgers reliever on the disabled list.
On June 21, Phil Bickford, a veteran righty who had been selected for a minor league deal, made five appearances for the New York Mets and gave up eight earned runs in five innings. The Yankees picked Josh Maciejewski’s contract from Triple-A in retaliation.
The majority of Bickford’s damage occurred on Saturday during the Yankees’ 9-3 defeat to the Toronto Blue Jays, when he allowed five runs in just two-thirds of an inning of relief work.
In his career, Bickford has made three trips to the waiver wire. Due to his lack of alternatives, the Yankees had to designate him and take the chance of losing him on waivers before he could be removed from the 40-man roster outright.
Considering the amount of innings tossed, Bickford’s ERA of 14.40 is extremely high, although it is still within a small sample size. He has an 11-8 record with a 4.70 ERA, two saves, 21 holds, and 208 strikeouts in 185.2 innings over portions of five big league seasons.
The former San Francisco Giants first-round selection made his Milwaukee Brewers debut before playing for the Dodgers in portions of 2021 and 2022.
