According to sources who spoke with ESPN on Monday, De’Anthony Melton is joining the Golden State Warriors on a one-year, $12.8 million contract under the midlevel exception.
Melton, a versatile defender and career 36.9% 3-point shooter, helps the Warriors fill in two gaps that they had identified at the beginning of the summer: more shooting and better defense, especially against the perimeter.
Melton also adds some depth to the backcourt after 19-year veteran Chris Paul was released and former Warrior Klay Thompson left.
The 26-year-old guard, who struggled to play next to Paul during his one-year stint with Golden State, might serve as Stephen Curry’s backup point guard.
Before being acquired by Philadelphia in the offseason of 2021–2022, Melton was a vital reserve for Memphis in the 2021–2022 season. For the past two seasons, he has primarily played as a starter for the 76ers.
Before enduring persistent back problems kept him out of the game for the majority of the season, he averaged 11.1 points in 38 games for Philadelphia this season.
