“Southampton Eyes Elsnik as Key Midfield Addition for Upcoming Premier League Season”
Elsnik, 26, has played in all three of Slovenia’s matches at EURO 2024 in Germany, with the team set to face Portugal in the round of 16.
A 19-cap international, he is the captain of NK Olimpija Ljubljana, where he has won the league title and two cup trophies.
According to The Daily Mail, both Southampton and Leicester are interested in signing Elsnik this summer ahead of the Premier League season. Lazio and Lyon are also reportedly keen on the midfielder, who is valued at £5.5 million.
Elsnik began his career in England with Derby County, playing in the Under-21 Premier League and making 50 League Two appearances on loan. He was released in 2019 and returned to Slovenia, where he has continued his club career.
In each of the last two league seasons, he has scored seven goals and provided five assists, and has participated in all three UEFA club competitions.
Elsnik contributed to Slovenia’s 0-0 draw against England on Tuesday, a result that saw Gareth Southgate’s team top the group.
A left-footed midfielder known for his versatility, Elsnik can play both offensive and defensive roles. Southampton needs to strengthen their midfield, having already signed Adam Lallana on a free transfer, with Stuart Armstrong set to leave at the end of his contract.
