At Summer League, one of the biggest March Madness talents will be playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
NC State standout DJ Burns will play with the Cleveland Cavaliers in Las Vegas next month, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic. Burns was not selected in the NBA Draft of 2024.
One of the breakout performers of the previous NCAA Tournament was 23-year-old Burns. Before NC State fell to Zach Edey’s Purdue in the Final Four (1983), he guided the team there.
Burns played three seasons at Winthrop and a redshirt year at Tennessee prior to his one season with the Wolfpack. He won the Big South Freshman of the Year award in 2020 and the Big South Player of the Year award at Winthrip in 2022. He won the Most Outstanding Player in the South Region award and the ACC tournament MVP while attending NC State.
Burns put up 12.5 points and 4.8 rebounds per game on average during his final season at NC State. during the competition.
Burns has work to do as a professional. He works a lot of inside jobs and is a large man, 6’9″ and 275 pounds. His approach isn’t very popular or useful in the current NBA. However, he has worked to improve his fitness since the end of the season and is obviously talented. He’s worth checking out in Summer League, and come autumn, he might be in the running for a two-way contract.
