“MCG will be field of dreams” Munster tells Dearden amid clash against NSW.

Although Cameron Munster won’t be on the field at the MCG for State of Origin II, he has given Tom Dearden, the five-eighth, hope that he can lead the Maroons to victory over NSW.

Due to a groin injury, Munster is out of the Origin series, but Dearden, 23, has filled in well for the star of the Melbourne Storm.

The co-captain of North Queensland contributed to the team’s 38-10 victory in game one and is prepared to step up at the MCG and help finish the series with one game remaining.

“Munny is fantastic. Although he doesn’t always offer guidance, Dearden remarked, “He gives me the confidence to go out and get the job done.”

“He is an excellent leader and mentor. It’s wonderful that he spoke to me in that character.

“Every time I get to wear the jersey, it’s special because we all know how influential and great a player Munny is for Queensland, so I want to make the most of the opportunity.”

In the 2022 Origin final, Dearden made his debut for the Maroons, leading them to victory when Munster was also out due to injury.

Despite the impressive play of Sydney Roosters half Sam Walker and Brisbane playmaker Ezra Mam, coach Billy Slater has faith in the young player.

“You always have to keep performing and look for ways to get better,” Dearden stated.

“Having so many young halves who are getting close to playing Origin is fantastic for Queensland.

“I don’t consider it to be a pressure. Whether or whether they were biting at my heels, I always stay true to myself. I have the internal desire to get better.

“As much as they are nipping, I just have to focus on my strengths and getting better to get my job done.”

Dearden, a former No. 7 player, is a contender to take over for Maroons captain Daly Cherry-Evans, who is 35 years old and may soon retire. “I’d be willing to carry that out,” Dearden stated.

“However, with the rate Daly is playing right now, it seems like he might play for eternity. Maybe (until he becomes 40). Right now, he’s in fantastic form.

“The organising tasks of halfback and five-eighth are extremely similar. I’m not thinking.
