Ipswich Town are reportedly leading Leeds United in the race to sign West Ham’s Ben Johnson on a free transfer. Although it was previously suggested that new West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui had approved offering Johnson a new contract, negotiations for a new deal at The London Stadium are ongoing with Johnson’s current contract set to expire.
If an agreement isn’t reached, West Ham will need to find a replacement during an already hectic transfer window. Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna is reportedly keen on the versatile defender and is aiming to bolster the squad following their promotion to the Premier League. Signing Johnson without a transfer fee would allow Ipswich to add a proven player while staying compliant with Financial Fair Play and sustainability regulations.
